Deputy gets timely reward after watch takes bullet

Nueces County Sheriff’s Deputy Roland Saenz planned to replace the watch that took a bullet for him, but not like this.
On Friday he put on a Rolex, a $5,000 timepiece with an 18-karat white gold outer ring around its face.
“That’s something you’d never imagine seeing on my wrist,” Saenz said, admiring the watch.
Saenz received the stainless steel timepiece from Moore Plaza’s Samuels Diamonds store in a special presentation.
“I’m still speechless,” Saenz said. “It’s just very surprising.”
The store’s master jeweler Hector Hinojosa said he asked his supervisors if the company could replace Saenz’s watch.
“This is a guy who’s given his life to help others,” Hinojosa said. “He deserves something like this.”
Saenz was one of two Nueces County sheriff’s deputies working off duty at the American Bank Center parking garage Dec. 17 when a man began shooting at them, Corpus Christi police have said.
