Hand-made jewellery of Surat famous world over

SURAT: Next time you visit jewellery showrooms in Mumbai and New Delhi to buy exquisite hand-made gold and diamond-studded jewellery articles, chances are you may end up buying the ones designed by Bengali artisans in Surat.

With over 700 jewellery manufacturing units employing about 90,000 skilled Bengali artisans, the city of diamonds is fast emerging as the hub of hand-made jewellery in the country.

Nainesh Patchigar, owner of S N Jewellers Private Limited, a leading hand-made jewellery manufacturer, said, "Hand-made jewellery of Surat is famous world over. We are catering to a wide range of jewellery wholesalers in Surat and other parts in the country on job-work basis. We have a dedicated team of about 200 Bengali artisans."

He said the city's jewellery manufacturing units are mostly concentrated in Bhagal and Balaji Road areas and manufacture hand-made jewellery worth Rs 800 crore per month. Five years ago, the manufacturing share of diamond-studded
